The 11th annual Mardi Gras Gala -- a fundraiser to support Kitty Askins Hospice Center -- will be held Saturday night, with four couples vying for the title of king and queen.

"Feed the Kitty" begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at Walnut Creek Country Club. Tickets are $100 and include dinner, a reverse drawing for a $5,000 prize and silent auction, as well as crowning of the couple raising the most money for the cause.

All proceeds for the gala, including money generated from the couples' efforts, benefit Kitty Askins and its programs, which include charity care, a veterans program, Butterfly Wings -- which grants a wish or dream to hospice patients -- and Wings Camp for Grieving Children.

The king and queen portion, introduced several years ago, has been growing tremendously. Last year, officials said six couples participated and raised $94,000.

The couples this year include the following:

*Steve and Rena Mason, a member services representative at Tri-County Electric Membership Corporation and an eighth-grade teacher at Mount Olive Middle School, respectively.

*Gabe and Donna Mitchell: He is department chair of agriculture and natural resources at Wayne Community College and teaches agribusiness and sustainable agriculture classes. He is also associate pastor at Garris Chapel United Methodist Church. His wife is a chemotherapy nurse at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center.

*Michael and Ginny Sauls: He is vice president of the family-owned business Country Pines, a residential treatment facility for those with developmental disabilities, while his wife is a certified occupational therapy assistant at Wilson Pines.

*Bruce and Ashley Walls, a salesman at Deacon Jones Kia and owner of Write On Valley, a monogramming and digitizing business, respectively.
