A Wilson woman is facing charges after allegedly using her children to fake a school fundraiser in Wayne County to get money.

Melonie Julia Haynes, 32, of 5046 Old Yank Road, Wilson, is charged with felony obtaining property by false pretense and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Haynes reportedly came to several neighborhoods in the Buck Swamp area of Wayne County and solicited money for a school fundraiser.

She brought her three children along with her, a press release said, and they did not go to the school she claimed they attended.

The release does not specify how old the children are, only saying they are "school age."

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the alleged fraudulent fundraising is thought to have happened between October 14 and Dec. 2017.

Haynes was arrested by the Wilson County Sheriff's Department.

She signed a written promise to appear in court to answer for the charges against her.

If anyone believes they may have been a victim of this crime, they are asked to call Capt. Shawn Harris at 919-731-1483.
