Five Wayne County math teachers ranked among state's Top 15

Five teachers from Wayne County Public Schools have been ranked among the top 15 North Carolina math teachers in their grade level for student growth.
The announcement was made at the recent Board of Education meeting.
The honorees included Amber Craig, a fourth-grade math teacher at Grantham Elementary School; Robin Bryant, an eighth-grade math teacher at Greenwood Middle; Andrew Bass, who teaches seventh-grade math at Norwayne Middle; Angela Lewis, seventh-grade math teacher at Rosewood Middle; and Laura Kester, eighth-grade math teacher at Rosewood Middle.
"These five teachers have achieved top state rankings for their commitment to student learning and their ability to keep students engaged in the classroom," said Dr. Yvette Smith Mason, assistant superintendent for human resources and professional development. "It is worth noting that two of these teachers were ranked within the top 10 of their grade level for student growth, with Mr. Bass ranked number two in North Carolina for seventh grade student growth."
Rankings were determined by the Education Value Added Assessment System, or EVAAS, growth index score for fourth through eighth grade math from the previous year. As part of the state's Fourth to Eighth Grade Math Teacher Bonus Program for 2017-2018, Mason said these five teachers will receive two bonuses, based on being in the top 25 percent of teachers in the district and the state according to the EVAAS student growth index for their subject area.
