A man told the Wayne County Sheriff's Office Wednesday that he was beaten and robbed in his yard in the 2200 block of Arrington Bridge Road Tuesday night.
A deputy met the 37-year-old victim at Wayne UNC Health Care Wednesday night, where he was admitted after the attack.
The victim had visible injuries to the left side of his head, a swollen ear and dried blood on his face.
He told the deputy he was in his yard Tuesday night, when a dark-colored car pulled up and two men got out wearing masks and hoodies.
The victim then tried to run back into his house but the two men cut him off.
One man was armed with a handgun, and the other had a steel bat or bar.
The men reportedly started yelling at him about disrespecting his girlfriend, and the victim recognized one of the men's voices.
The men then continued to yell at him when one of them fired three shots into the ground near the victim. He jumped back and fell down on the ground.
One of the men then hit him in the head with the steel bat or bar, knocking him unconscious.
When he came to, the men and car were gone and about $250 had been taken from his pockets.
The deputy asked the victim why he waited to contact law enforcement, and he reportedly said he was scared of the men retaliating against him and seriously hurting him.
The victim told the deputy his father made him come to the emergency room to be checked out.
The case is under investigation.
