Goldsboro Police Department to hold job fair Dec. 6

Full SizePeople interested in a career in law enforcement will have an opportunity to learn about the benefits associated with becoming a Goldsboro police officer at the department's upcoming job fair Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. at the W.A. Foster Center.
Internal Affairs investigator and supervisor of the Crime Scene Unit for the Goldsboro Police Department, Sgt. Michael Sweet said that several officers will be on hand to talk to potential applicants about what it's like to be an officer.
Sweet said the Police Department will be the only agency there advertising its employment opportunities.
The intent, Sweet said, is to recruit local people with ties and roots in the community.
The starting pay for an officer is $35,949 per year, and there are educational and experience incentives offered.
Anyone hired with prior law enforcement or military experience would start at a higher pay grade, as would anyone with a two or four-year degree in criminal justice. The pay rate increase differs based on levels of experience and education.
The department offers a limited number of scholarships ---- up to $5,000 ---- for Basic Law Enforcement Training school attendees.
Sweet said the department is always trying to recruit strong candidates to become officers, and it is better when they can find someone local who wants to pursue the career.
"It's better to get someone with ties to here," Sweet said.
The job fair begins at 3 p.m. and runs until 6 p.m.
The W.A. Foster Center is located at 1012 S. John St.
Minimum requirements to become an officer with the Goldsboro Police Department include:
• Be at least 20 years old
• Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Be a U.S. citizen
• Have a high school diploma or GED certificate.
• Vision correctable to 20/20 and no color blindness.
• Be able to successfully pass a background/criminal history check.
