After a man escaped the back of a police cruiser Monday night, he was charged for stealing the handcuffs he was wearing after officers caught up to him.
Everaldo Francisco Mateo, 22, of 108 Country View Drive, is charged with resist, delay and obstruct, larceny and possession of stolen goods.
Mateo allegedly chased a family member around with a knife inside the house where they both live.
The victim jumped out the window to escape his would-be assailant and sustained injuries from the fall.
When police responded to a stabbing call at the home at about 10:17 p.m. Monday, they put Mateo in the back of a patrol car after finding him in the woods behind the home while they spoke to people inside.
They found out Mateo had not stabbed anyone, but instead had chased a family member around the house with a knife.
Officers returned to the patrol car after talking with people inside and found Mateo had escaped -- while still wearing handcuffs.
Maj. Anthony Carmon, head of the Goldsboro Police Department's Investigative Services Bureau, said Mateo was able to roll down the back window and climb out.
Approximately two hours after they first responded to the house, they found Mateo back at the home.
Carmon said he was not sure how officers learned Mateo was back at the house.
He still had the handcuffs on from the first time he was arrested and detained.
Officers charged him for stealing the handcuffs when he fled the patrol car with them still on.
Mateo was put in the Wayne County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond.
