Well Travelled Beer, a craft beer bottle shop in downtown Goldsboro, is planned to expand after operating less than a year in the city.
John Hodge, co-owner of the 201 S. Center St. business, is seeking a conditional-use permit that would allow the city's first craft beer store to double in size and expand its seating capacity to nearly 60 customers.
The Goldsboro Planning Commission voted Monday to recommend to the city council approval of the permit. The council will vote on the request during its May 8 meeting.
Well Travelled Beer, which opened in June 2016, is located inside a 1,600-square-foot building on South Center Street. The permit would allow for the renovation of another 1,674-square-feet of space inside the building that extends along West Chestnut Street.
The renovated area would provide an additional 34 seats and storage space.
Well Travelled Beer is popular for its stock of more than 160 craft beers from across North Carolina, the nation and world. The store also has wine and eight different rotating beer taps.
Also on Monday, the planning commission approved an ordinance amendment that places greater restrictions on future internet sweepstake parlors in the city.
Pending council approval in May, internet sweepstake businesses will only be allowed to locate in the general business zones. The businesses will be required to be at least one mile from an existing sweepstake operation and be at least 500 feet from a residence, church, school, playground, day care and public park.
In other business, the commission approved for recommendation to the city council:
* A revision to the preliminary subdivision plan for Meares Bluff Plantation, on Patetown Road, that includes the proposal to start Phase II of development and the addition of 24 lots.
* A conditional-use permit to State Electric Supply Co. for the outside storage of goods and materials associated with a contractor's office and retail supply business, on North George Street.
* A site plan for the State Employees Credit Union that allows the addition of a covered automated teller machine and 49 new parking spaces, at the back of the Cashwell Street building.
* A site plan for Stratus Properties allowing the addition of 23 new mini-storage units at 907 S. John St.
The planning commission recommendations will be considered by the city council during its May 8 meeting.
