Gov. Roy Cooper, seen here congratulating local volunteer MacKenzie Hinson, 12, on her continuing efforts, stopped by Wayne County Thursday to discuss the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Matthew.

Gov. Roy Cooper stopped by Wayne County Thursday afternoon to hear concerns from local leaders about their unmet needs and their ideas on the state's efforts to help communities recover from the devastation of Hurricane Matthew in October.

Cooper and county officials discussed the need for affordable housing ---- both now and in the future ---- for those affected by the storm.

The governor also stressed the importance of learning from the storm, such as getting and keeping homes and businesses out of flood plains to prevent such devastation from happening in the future.
