Six Wayne County juniors to attend Governor's School

Six high school juniors have been chosen to attend the 2017 Governor's School of North Carolina this summer.
Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students.
The program is open to rising seniors only, with the exception of rising juniors accepted into the visual/performing arts program.
The sessions are held on two campuses. Governor's School West, established in 1963, is at Salem College in Winston-Salem, while Governor's School East, established in 1978, takes place at Meredith College in Raleigh.
Attending Governor's School West will be Katie Brown from Charles B. Aycock High School, and Alston Tyndall from Eastern Wayne High School, both selected for the dance program, and Howard Caudill of Southern Wayne High school, studying natural science.
The three students attending Governor's School East will be Wisdom DeVaughn of Goldsboro High School, in the area of English; Hanbin Koo of CBA, in instrumental music; and Caleb Whitted, studying natural science.
The WCPS students are among 600 students from around the state selected to participate. The 2017 program will be held from June 18 until July 26.
The district has historically had good representation in the state's prestigious program.
Amy Williams, the district's academically or intellectually gifted coordinator, said 50 percent of this year's applicants from Wayne County were accepted to attend.
