Longtime Wayne County educator, coach, principal and assistant superintendent, R.G. "Pete" Gurley, of Mount Olive, died today at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

He was 80 years old.

Gurley, who also served 12 years as at-large member of the school board until 2008, is being remembered by friends and colleagues for being an advocate for students and a fierce competitor.
