Christmas is closer than you think and it's already the time of the year to be preparing shoeboxes of gifts for needy children around the world through the Samaritan's Purse outreach organization.
Every year, millions of shoeboxes are packed full of goodies here in the United States and shipped overseas to give needy children something to look forward to at Christmas. Samaritan's Purse is the charity headed by the Rev. Franklin Graham.
Adamsville Baptist Church will once again serve as a collection center for shoeboxes from churches and individuals in the Wayne County area.
Shoeboxes should designed to sent to a boy or girl of a certain age and be filled with a significant toy that will bring happiness to a little face, such as a doll or deflated soccer ball with pump, and completed with school items such as pencils, pens, crayons and notebooks or non-liquid hygiene items such as toothbrushes, bar soap, washcloths or combs.
A personal not and a photograph of the giving family, along with a name and address, gives the receiving child faces to put with the gifts and encourages them to write back to the giver.
Do not include used or damaged items, war-related items such as toy guns, toy knives or military figures, pocketknives, seeds, chocolate or food, liquids or lotions, medications or vitams or breakable items or aerosol cans.
Donors should include $7 to help pay for shipping costs and discover the destination of your shoebox by giving to Follow Your Box online.
Age groups are 2-4 years old, 5-9 years old, and 10-14 years old. Gifts appropriate for a boy or girl should be included and designated, along with the age group, on the outside of the box, which should be giftwrapped.
Shoeboxes are delivered to childen in more than 100 countries around the world. Have your church or group take your boxes to the collection center or one of the relay centers during national collection week November 14-21.
