A 27-year-old man was shot early this morning at a liquor house at the intersection of Wilmington Avenue and Sycamore Street.

Theo Reshawn Washington, of 1100 Jefferson Ave. Apt. 2, sustained significant injuries and is being treated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Medical Center, according to a release from the Goldsboro Police Department.

Officers responded to a shots fired call at 3:30 a.m. Saturday and found Washington suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Goldsboro Police Chief Mike West said Washington was struck three times in his abdomen and side by the shots. West said Washington had surgery at Wayne Memorial Hospital before being taken to the UNC Chapel Hill Medical Center.

Maj. Anthony Carmon, head of the Goldsboro Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, said officers received a call about the shots being fired, as well as a ShotSpotter alert.

Carmon said he did not know how many shots were fired during the incident.

"We don't know what his condition is now," Carmon said.

When officers arrived on scene, there were no witnesses around that were willing to speak with police, Carmon said.

West said police discovered the shooting happened at a liquor house after a neighbor in the area provided them information about the residence being a hotbed of drugs and alcohol.

"Somebody in the neighborhood gave us information that the residence was a problem, and said nothing but thugs hang out there and there are continuous problems with drugs and alcohol," West said.

West said police are going to begin aggressively going after liquor houses, which store and sell liquor without a license.

When officers arrived on scene in response to the shooting, West said there was a large number of people fleeing the area "very quickly."

"We are going to be very aggressive about these liquor houses," West said. "Instead of just driving by to try and hamper their business and move them along, we're going to start going after the homeowners and do everything we can to shut down these liquor houses."

West said he is asking that the community provide information to the police department about the location of liquor houses throughout the city any way they can.

"I don't care how they get me the information," West said. "They can give me a phone call, an e-mail, drop me a note -- I don't even need to know who it comes from."

Investigators do not yet know if there was one person or multiple people involved in the shooting.

"It's a little early for that," Carmon said.

The Goldsboro Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting call Investigator A. Patelos at 919-580-4217.
