A man eluded police twice Sunday, resulting in two high-speed chases in Mount Olive.

According to the Mount Olive Police Department, Nathaniel Bruce Britt, 29, of Albertson, was driving a black Dodge van east on Park Avenue when an officer followed him because the passenger, Matthew Coley, 24, of 515 Parkwood Lane was not wearing a seatbelt.

The report said Britt accelerated his speed to 90 miles per hour on North Church Road and then turned on N.C. 55. Britt's van veered past the center line, and he drove in the wrong lane before he stopped the van on the side of the road.

Coley stepped out of the van and held a blue bag in his hand, according to the police. The officer asked Coley to lie on the ground, but Coley remained standing. The report said Britt drove the vehicle back onto N.C. 55.

Britt accelerated his speed to 90 miles an hour again as he was followed by the officer. Britt then turned onto Pineview Cemetery Road, where he eventually pulled over to the shoulder of the road.

The officer searched Britt's van and found several knives and jewelry, which could be stolen, the report said. The officer found that Britt's license had been revoked.

Britt was arrested for fleeing to elude arrest, driving while license revoked and careless and reckless driving. He is in jail under a $5,000 bond. Coley was arrested for resist, delay and obstruct, and no seat belt. No bond has been set for Coley.
