KENANSVILLE -- A veteran leader Tuesday called into question the qualifications and temperament of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Former Delta Force Deputy Commander Col. (Ret.) Earl Atkinson made his comments Tuesday afternoon during a press conference outside the Duplin County Events Center filled with nearly 6,000 waiting to hear Trump speak.
Trump is temperamentally unfit to be commander-in-chief and has pattern of divisive and deplorable language, including recent comments referencing possible acts of violence against Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Atkinson said.
He also highlighted the continued disdain that Trump has exhibited towards the nation's veterans by disrespecting Gold Star families.
Atkinson also said that Trump's plan that would put the VA on the path to privatization, which would deprive veterans of the unique support they need and deserve.
Atkinson contrasted Trump's failed leadership on veteran's issues with Hillary Clinton's proven record of fighting for veterans and military families and her vision to make America safer and stronger together.
"Donald Trump is erratic and reckless, and frankly, I'm frightened to think of what would happen with regard to the safety of our men and women who are out there on the front lines defending our freedom if he were to become commander-in-chief," Atkinson said. "I stand with the people of North Carolina in declaring that Trump's lack of respect for American soldiers and veterans is not only worrisome and disgraceful-- it is completely out of sync with what most North Carolinians believe. In fact, it is outright contrary to our values."
The press conference comes two weeks after 110 retired generals and admirals endorsed Mrs. Clinton for president, citing her proven record of diplomacy and steady leadership on the world stage.
