After more than 30 years of publication, for the first time Wayne County Public Schools has published its annual Wayne Collection of student artwork and writing from every school online.

"We are very excited to be presenting the Wayne Collection for the very first time, as a digital gallery and collection on the WCPS website," said Tamara Berman-Ishee, WCPS assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. "Not only is the work of our students compelling and exciting to read and see, but we are bringing the presentation of this work into the 21st century. We hope to reach a much wider audience for the Wayne Collection with this new digital format."

The district first produced the Wayne Collection in 1985, as a literary/art contest and magazine, officials said. It was designed to give students from across the district recognition in the areas of writing and art.

In recent years, instead of a contest, submissions were determined by teachers at each school.

Kim Copeland, director specialist, coordinated this year's effort to convert the paper publication to a digital version.

"By taking the Wayne Collection online, we can bring the best of our student work to the world," she said. "This online gallery and collection is phenomenal. All of the students and their teachers are to be commended for their efforts."

The effort will be enhanced further next year, she added, as the district brings back the literary/art contest, encouraging students to submit their work. More information will be shared with the schools when students return in the fall.

The Wayne Collection can be found on the district website, www.waynecountyschools.org.
