Save-a-Lot grocery store on North Berkeley Boulevard is now closed.

The store, located in the Berkeley Plaza at 211 N. Berkeley Blvd., closed permanently Monday and employees worked most of the week to clear out the 37,390-square-foot building. Save-a-Lot is located in the same shopping center as Kmart.

Several employees working inside the store Friday declined to talk about the company's decision. Corporate officials, with the Kentucky-based Saver Group, which operates Save-a-Lot stores in several states, were also unavailable.

Goldsboro resident Lillie Lewis, a frequent Save-a-Lot shopper, was taken by surprise when she arrived at the store Friday morning to find several business closing signs on the front door.

"I don't like it too hot because the prices are very cheap," Lewis said. "I got no notice or nothing. It's kind of sad. I hate to see them go, but, oh well."

Lewis, who stopped at the store once every two weeks, packed up her children and headed off to the nearest Food Lion, where she'll likely do most of her shopping in the future.

Save-a-Lot was nearly cleared out Friday, with most shelves empty and shopping carts stocked with merchandise. Employees packed the items and rolled them onto a trailer for transport elsewhere.

Save-a-Lot, which offered a limited assortment of groceries and low-cost options, opened in 2006 in the Berkeley Plaza inside the former Winn-Dixie grocery store.
