A woman is dead and a 4-year-old child is in serious condition following a fatal wreck on New Hope Road Tuesday afternoon.
Larose Holland Evans, 71, of 315 Apt. B Charles St., was killed in a wreck on New Hope Road three-tenths of a mile east of Miller's Chapel Road, and the four-year-old child that was in the car when the car wrecked is in serious condition at Vidant Medical Center.
Trooper Justin Arnette said the woman driving the car ran off the road and hit a railroad tie that was in someone's driveway before the car came to rest.
"The driver of the vehicle crossed the center line, ran off the road to the left, struck a railroad tie in someone's driveway, and she eventually struck a brick driveway culvert and that's where she came to rest," Arnette said.
Arnette said Ms. Evans struck a total of three driveway borders before her car came to rest. He said two of the three driveway borders she struck were "badly damaged."
"She had heavy damage to the front left corner of her vehicle, and of the driveway borders she struck, two of three were badly damaged," Arnette said.
The 4-year-old child was initially taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment before being flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
As of 7:45 a.m. this morning, Arnette said the four-year-old child is in the children's hospital at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville and is still alive.
"I called this morning and the only thing they will tell me is that she is still alive," Arnette said.
Arnette said troopers estimated Ms. Evans was traveling 45 miles per hour at the time of her wreck.
"Where she wrecked, the speed limit had just changed to 55, so we estimated she was going 45," Arnette said.
Arnette said troopers do not yet know what caused the 71-year-old woman to run off the road.
