The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the 2016-17 Leadership Wayne County program that seeks emerging leaders with an interest in improving the community.

Applications are being accepted through Thursday and are available at the chamber at 308 N. William St., or on the chamber's website.

Leadership Wayne is an eight-month program that starts in September and includes monthly meetings, a community service project, retreats and attendance at community board meetings.

The program is open to people with demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in improving the local community. Monthly classes also offer a deeper look into different facets of the community, with class topics and tours related to history, community service, education, agri-business, law and government, business and industry and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base said Kate Daniels, president of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.

"When people finish, they have an appreciation for the community they didn't have before," Daniels said. "Whether you've lived here your whole life or you just moved here, you can't get the inside look that this program affords you to."

Class members participate in discussions and activities designed to strengthen leadership skills and also select a community service project for the betterment of the community.

Leadership Wayne County is a 30-year Wayne County Chamber of Commerce program that has produced 400 graduates since its inception, Daniels said.
