Public officials, law enforcement, community organizations and churches will all be a part of a Community Fun Day planned Saturday in the Lincoln Homes neighborhood off Poplar Street.

The event is being offered through a newly formed Our Community Cares group, in partnership with the Goldsboro Community Affairs Department.

The fun day will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in an open lot near the basketball court at the end of Poplar Street, said Shycole Simpson-Carter, Goldsboro community relations director.

Food, live music, a motivational speaker, a large sprinkler, face painting, games and a bounce house are all planned during the evening. Food, including hot dogs, chips and popcorn, and drinks will be provided at no cost. The city also plans to give out 200 Our Community Cares T-shirts, Simpson-Carter said.

The event is an opportunity for area residents to talk with local leaders and Our Community Cares members about any needs or concerns they have.

"The main goal of Our Community Cares campaign and events is to build stronger community relationships to make Goldsboro a better place," Simpson-Carter said. "(It's) to maintain public trust within our community and re-establish public trust within areas of the community where there is a disconnect for whatever reason.

"We just really want them to know the city of Goldsboro, the local churches and the community based agencies are all here working together and are here to work with them to make a change to make Goldsboro better overall."

Our Community Cares is composed of members who represent city government, nonprofit organizations, the Goldsboro Police Department and Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Mayor Chuck Allen, who will speak at the event, serves as the chairman of Our Community Cares.

Members of the group plan to interact with residents, listen to any concerns and offer information or connections with area resources, Simpson-Carter said.
