Wayne County is under a heat advisory that is expected to continue through the week as temperatures push toward the 100-degree mark.
"Basically, this pattern's going to continue for the next several days, and we've got highs in the middle to upper 90s through at least Sunday," said Ryan Ellis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Raleigh.
"Each of these days, you're looking at a heat index of 100 to 105."
The heat advisory was issued Monday, with temperatures near 96 degrees and a heat index between 103 and 107 degrees.
Dangerously hot weather is predicted today, with temperatures in the mid- to upper- 90s and a heat index topping 105 degrees.
Being in direct sunlight will cause temperatures to feel even hotter, the National Weather Service reports.
"There's probably going to be heat advisories through the rest of the week," Ellis said.
Heat advisories are an indicator that heat-related illness, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke, could set in due to the mix of high temperatures and humidity.
A high pressure system over the eastern half of the state and the East Coast is leading to heat advisories this week, Ellis said.
"Basically, the whole East from Connecticut down through where we are in North Carolina," Ellis said. "The high pressure system hasn't moved."
Temperatures are expected to lower into the mid to upper 70 degrees during the evening hours, Ellis said. The heat advisory today continues until 8 p.m.
