A Goldsboro man was arrested and charged early Saturday morning with felony trafficking in opium and simple possession of a schedule VI controlled substance following a traffic stop on North William Street.
Glen Anthony Coles, 30, of 209 Stoney Manor Drive, was stopped Saturday around 2 a.m. while driving a gold Mercedes on North William Street for an alleged traffic violation involving the turn signals of the car he was reportedly driving.
Maj. Anthony Carmon with the Goldsboro Police Department said he did not have information on what the issue was with Coles' turn signals that led to his being pulled over.
Officers with the Goldsboro Police Department D-Shift and Vice Unit were working an off-duty assignment and initiated the traffic stop, according to a press release on the incident.
Carmon said the police department regularly assigns off-duty assignments to officers that they are paid for, from private establishment security to increased patrols in certain areas of the city.
"We have a number of assignments for officers to work on during their off-time," Carmon said.
The officers who stopped Coles received backup from on-duty C-Shift officers and searched the vehicle.
Carmon said he could not release information on what led to the vehicle being searched, because that information could be used in court.
According to the press release, officers found a concealed handgun, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and "a trafficking amount of opiates" as a result of the search.
A passenger riding with Coles, K'tia Rose Hudson, was also arrested during the stop. Ms. Hudson, 22, of 2005 Peachtree St., was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and simple possession of a schedule VI controlled substance. She was placed under a $2,500 secured bond. Her first appearance is Aug. 17.
Coles was placed under a $500,000 bond. His first appearance in court was held Monday.
