The former president of the Goldsboro Tennis Association turned himself in to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office July 7 on charges accusing him of embezzling more than $10,000 from the organization.
Michael Boothman, 30, of 8250 Lakewood Branch Blvd. Apt. 101, Bladenton, Fla., was charged with felony embezzlement for allegedly embezzling $10,775 from the Goldsboro Tennis Association.
Boothman lived in Wayne County during the time the alleged offenses occurred from April 2014 to May 2015, said Sgt. Jeremy Sutton with the Goldsboro Police Department.
During Boothman's residency in Wayne County, he lived at 103 Stargrass Circle in Goldsboro, Sutton said.
The tennis association reported the theft on June 10, and further investigation by the Goldsboro Police Department developed Boothman as a suspect.
Boothman had moved to Florida by the time he was named as a suspect in the case.
Boothman set up a meeting with police at the Goldsboro Police Department after officers contacted him, but failed to appear at the meeting.
"He got in contact with his lawyer and ended up turning himself in," Sutton said. "That's what he was waiting on, was to make arrangements with his lawyer to turn himself in."
Sutton said Boothman turned himself in with his lawyer present.
Warrants were issued for Boothman's arrest on June 28. Several attempts were made to serve the warrants on Boothman in Florida, but were unsuccessful.
Following Boothman turning himself in, he was given a $1,500 secured bond and placed in the Wayne County Detention Center.
