The car of Leona Cobb, 91, sits on its side Thursday after firefighters from Northeast and Fremont Fire Departments had to cut the roof off to remove the woman who was pronounced dead at the scene. The wreck happened in the early afternoon when Cobb ran off of the road and hit a tree at 2418 N.C. 222 East.
A 91-year-old Eureka woman is dead after she ran off the road at 2418 N.C. 222 East Thursday afternoon.
Leona Sasser Cobb, of 129 N. Church St., Eureka, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck after crashing into a tree in Emerson Newsome's front yard.
Nobody else was in the car at the time of the wreck, and no other cars were involved. There is no official word on what caused Ms. Cobb to run off the road.
Valerie Goff was driving behind Ms. Cobb when she wrecked and called 911.
"I was driving behind her and I saw her speed up, swerve in the lane, go off the road and into the ditch and then hit the tree," Ms. Goff said. "When I saw her hit the tree is when I pulled over and hopped out of the car to check on her and called 911."
Tammie Stiferman is a nurse's aide and was taking care of Newsome's wife inside the house at the time of the wreck.
"I heard the crash and ran outside to see what happened," Ms. Stiferman said. "We busted out the windshield to check on her and she had no pulse and was already turning blue."
A roughly one mile portion of N.C. 222 extending away in both directions from the house was shut down for about an hour to allow firefighters and law enforcement officers to process the scene.
The portion that was closed reopened just after 2 p.m.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Northeast Volunteer Fire Department and Fremont Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the scene of the wreck.
