CLINTON -- Duplin County's Extension Community Association recently had its first awards program in years.
The North Carolina ECA is a creative and motivated group with a focus on strengthening families' quality of life. This organization has been around for over 100 years and has helped thousands of individuals through community projects.
Members gathered at Zeng's Palace in Clinton, where they held a celebration to acknowledge their achievements over the last year.
Amanda Hatcher, the county Extension director, gave greetings to the members and thanked them for the hard work they have done, and always do, as a part of the Duplin County Cooperative Extension.
Helen Rogers served as the ECA's guest speaker for the event. She spoke to the members about the value of volunteerism, not only to society but to the individual as well. Her speech resonated with many of the members, expressing the purpose in their service to the community.
The awards ceremony commenced after Mrs. Roger's speech. Awards were presented to the past presidents, Doreatha Roberts and Theresa Bowles, thanking them for the time they put into serving for the ECA. Several of the volunteers were recognized for the hours they have spent in the community.
In 2014, three members were awarded plaques at the ECA state conference. Annie Pickett was awarded a plaque for putting in 10,000 hours in ECA service, Delilah Gomes was awarded a plaque for 25,000 hours, and Ruby Brinson, the 2015 Outstanding Leader, was awarded the highest plaque for 35,000 hours of service.
