Days of Action to begin Tuesday

United Way of Wayne County will begin holding volunteer events in Goldsboro and Mount Olive Tuesday as part of the week-long "Days of Action" volunteer program.

The program was created thanks to a grant United Way received from Depend, which was contingent on volunteer activities promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. The previous "Days of Caring" event that United Way held each year didn't have that particular focus, and United Way Community Engagement Manager Catherine LeChot said that "Days of Action" will likely be the standard going forward.

The event is made up of a series of volunteer opportunities taking place from Tuesday through Friday. The events range from meal deliveries and car washing to working with Habitat for Humanity in their Restore facility and on home build sites.

Mrs. LeChot said that many volunteers have come forward, but United Way is still looking for more.

"We have about 80 volunteers signed up, our projected goal was 100, and we still have some time through next week." she said.

Mrs. LeChot added that, with the current number of volunteers, each event will be staffed.

"We're really excited about the participation," she said. "Especially since people had gotten so used to Days of Caring, to kind of switch it up and do Days of Action, we're really glad to have that support."

Prospective volunteers can sign up on www.volunteerwayne.org, a site that United Way runs as a sort of job board for volunteer opportunities. Any non-profit group can create an account and post their volunteer opportunities for the public to browse.

Volunteers can join as individuals or in teams. Teams from several community groups, such as the city of Goldsboro, Strickland Insurance and Youth in Cahoots, which is a youth volunteer program on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
