Wayne County students recognized by UMO

MOUNT OLIVE -- Several Wayne County students were recognized for their achievements at the University of Mount Olive's annual awards ceremony.
Among those receiving awards were:
Donald Alan Brinson of Mount Olive received the Visual Student of the Year Award. Brinson is a December 2015 graduate. This award is given to an outstanding art or visual communication major with a minimum GPA of 3.5, who displays academic excellence, professional service and personal growth.
Billy Mansfield of Goldsboro received the Analytics Student of the Year Award. Mansfield is a senior management of information systems major. This award is given to an outstanding analytics senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with resume-capturing leadership qualities, community contributions and other interests.
Brandon Lee of Mount Olive received the North Carolina State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners Exam Voucher. Lee is a senior accounting major. The board provides an exam voucher to a selected student to cover the expense of taking the North Carolina Certified Public Accountant exam.
Nicklaus Drake Shaw of Goldsboro received the M.L Johnson Business Award. Shaw is a junior management major. The M.L. Johnson Business Award is a scholarship in memory of M.L. Johnson (1916-1969), the first treasurer/business manager of the University of Mount Olive (1951-1961).
The scholarship is given to a rising senior selected by the business faculty for greatest promise in the field of business.
John Ryan of Mount Olive received the Michael Bumgarner Outstanding Student of the Year in Criminal Justice and Criminology Award. Ryan is a December 2015 graduate.
The Michael Bumgarner Outstanding Student of the Year is awarded to a student of senior standing with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The student should promote the university's covenant, demonstrate quality leadership and intellectual maturity. Michael Bumgarner was a former lead professor at the university's RTP location.
Kiera Daniels of Pikeville received the Don Miller Award. Ms. Daniels is a senior criminal justice and criminology major. This award is given in memory of Det. Donald A. Miller, a Criminal Justice Department graduate and New Bern police officer who gave his life in the line of duty.
The award is given to the criminal justice student who best demonstrates academic prowess in the classroom and professionalism in the criminal justice field. The recipient is selected by the criminal justice student awards committee. The recipient must be a senior with a minimum 3.2 GPA in either the modular or online program format.
The recipient should promote the university's covenant and demonstrate quality leadership and intellectual maturity.
Micah Elizabeth Lee of Mount Olive received the Music Student of the Year Award. Lee is a sophomore biology and piano performance major. The Music Student of the Year Award is given to the senior student who best exemplifies the ideals of a successful music major by demonstrating discipline and musical excellence.
Selection criteria include: minimum GPA of 3.2, music major, academic excellence, professional service and outstanding musical ability.
