The public is invited to weigh in on the five-year strategic plan for the public schools, with a series of community meetings around the county starting next week.
In the fall, Wayne County Public Schools administration held parent meetings to kick off the discussion about ways to improve the county's education.
District leaders are formulating the 2016-2021 strategic plan with a focus in three areas -- academics and instruction, resources and supports, and work and learning environment.
Follow-up meetings are planned in each of the six district attendance zones to provide an update and overview of the district's proposed plan. The strategic plan is still being finalized and expected to be presented to the Wayne County Board of Education for approval in July.
"Last fall, we sought input from stakeholders on where they would like to see our schools in the next two to five years," said Dr. Michael Dunsmore, WCPS superintendent. "In addition, my administrative team has taken a hard look at where we are as a district in regards to facilities, finances, academic supports and technology.
"It is our hope that as a part of this strategic planning process, we can bring to the Board of Education and to our Wayne County stakeholders a realistic plan that will transform our district and move each of our schools forward over the next five years."
The format of each meeting, he said, will include an overview of the plan, followed by an opportunity for questions and comments.
Meeting dates, locations and coverage areas include the following:
*May 16 -- Eastern Wayne High cafeteria: Eastern Wayne elementary, middle and high schools, Greenwood Middle, Meadow Lane Elementary and Tommy's Road Elementary
*May 19 -- Goldsboro High auditorium: Carver Heights, North Drive and School Street elementary schools, Dillard Middle and GHS
