Despite demand reduction, tobacco is still money maker

Alselmo Ranciel spreads fertilizer in a tobacco field owned by Andy Evans on Union Grove Church Road west of Fremont on Wednesday. Farmers have just finished planting tobacco in fields across the county and are looking for some rain to get the plants off to a good start. Wayne growers have planted several thousand acres of the golden leaf this year. Despite reductions in demand by the tobacco companies, it remains a big cash crop in the county.
