Merdie Best and Renee Pope eat a few of the strawberries they bought from the Cottle produce stand in Mar-Mac Monday. After eating the first strawberry Merdie grabs another and said, "It's like a potato chip, you can't have just one." The mother and daughter are using the strawberries for a secret family recipe for their Mother's Day strawberry shortcake.

Candice Best and her daughter Sydney Cloutier, 10, pick strawberries Monday afternoon at the Cottle strawberry patch. Best said, "I'm off Monday and she gets out of school at 1, so this is our day to do things together." The juicy red fruits will be ripe for the picking through the first week in June.

Strawberry season is in full swing. Cottle Farms is one local grower that is offering strawberries at its produce stand in Mar-Mac.
