A man is being held in the Wayne County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond after someone attempted to rob the Speedway gas station at 400 E. Ash St. over the weekend.

A man entered the gas station at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday while wearing dark clothes and a ski mask.

The robber then allegedly attempted to hand the gas station attendant on duty a letter.

When the attendant refused to accept the letter, the robber turned to the door, took off the ski mask and walked out.

The attendant called police and reported the incident, describing the robber as "white with black hair, kinda tall and skinny."

Officers located Omax Gardner Powell, 29, of 303 S. John St., walking on the 300 block of East Mulberry Street, a short distance from the gas station, carrying a knife.

Powell was arrested and charged with felony attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and a concealed carry of a weapon.

"The fact that we don't have an additional charge of resisting an officer gives me the indication that there was no incident with the arrest," said Maj. Anthony Carmon, head of the Criminal Investigations Division of the Goldsboro Police Department.

Carmon did not know whether or not Powell had posted his bond as of this morning.
