Two men shot while standing in the 900 block of Hugh Street Thursday morning will recover, the Goldsboro Police Department said.

The incident took place at 8:25 a.m.

According to the police report, Michael Caleb Hackney, 27, and Alquan Jermique Dunn, 26, were "standing around" when a vehicle drove by and the occupants started shooting.

Officers learned the details after responding to the area to reports of shots fired, only to find there were no victims. Hackney and Dunn later showed up at Wayne Memorial Hospital with injuries, and officers interviewed the men there.

"These were non-life threatening injuries," Maj. Anthony Carmon said. "When we interviewed them they were alert, they were in a little pain, but there were no complications."

Carmon said both men were struck once in the lower leg, toward the ankle area. One of the men was struck in the groin.

According to the report, another person showed up to the hospital a short time later with a laceration to his arm.

Hykeem Deonte Coley, 26, of Dudley, said he had been in an altercation at Beestown Grocery, a convenience store located at 905 S. Slocumb St., and the men he was fighting with chased his car.

The suspects followed Coley into the 900 block of Hugh Street, where the car he was riding in was struck by three bullets as he got out.

A neighboring residence was also struck by a bullet, but the bullet did not pass through the house. The caliber is identified on the report as a .45.

Hackney and Dunn suggested they were mere bystanders when all of the shooting took place, but investigators were not convinced.

"I am not sure if I believe that story" Carmon said. "They were not being very helpful."
