"Dorothy's Adventure in Oz" characters rehearse a scene. Pictured from left are Patricia Faulk as the Wicked Witch of the East, Allison Barrow as Dorothy and Rachel Musher as Glinda the Good Witch of the North.

Audience members will have the chance to take a trip to the magical land of Oz when the Goldsboro Ballet performs "Dorothy's Adventure in Oz" Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Paramount Theatre.

It will be directed by Peggy Wingate and Mary Franklin with Goldsboro Ballet.

This will be the ballet's second time doing this particular production.

"We bought it from the Asheville Ballet in 2011 and did it then," Mrs. Wingate said. "This year we added some of our own ideas."

The Goldsboro Ballet has transformed pointe shoes into red shoes with sequins for Dorothy.

The performance has a variety of dance styles -- traditional ballet, tap, tumbling and jazz.

But it follows the traditional "Wizard of Oz" storyline, Mrs. Wingate said.

"Our witch will be scary, but not too scary," she said. "Our flying monkeys will be fun to see in their brown and red costumes."

And there may even be a real life Toto.

"We are trying hard to find a real dog that will cooperate," Mrs. Wingate said. "We do have a stuffed animal Toto. The last time we did the production we had real dog and he cooperated."

To enhance the storyline, the dancers are working on their facial expressions, Mrs. Wingate said.

There will be a large Oz with fire and smoke.

"We're actually depicting the tornado," Mrs. Wingate said. "We've got a moving bed. The characters will give you a feeling that you're seeing a real tornado.

"At the end, we send Oz off in a balloon. That will be fun."

During intermission, there will be an Emerald City buffet with all kinds of treats for $5 for all you can eat.

The school synopsis shows will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre. Teachers and assistants will get in for free.

Tickets for "Dorothy's Adventure in Oz" are $16 for adults and $12 for ages 18 and younger, available at the Paramount box office, by calling 919-583-8432 or online at www.goldsboroparamount.com.
