Mike Overman, better known as "Shagdaddy" deejaying and event before he passed in 2015. He was a popular deejay and community supporter and will be remembered during a fundraiser in his honor on Saturday. The event, sponsored by Sugarfoot Shag Club, will benefit some of the local charities that Overman supported through the years.

A fundraiser/dance for local charities is just the kind of thing Mike "Shagdaddy" Overman would have wanted to be part of, say organizers of the Saturday event in his honor.

"Mike was a Sugarfoot Shag Club member for many, many years," said club president Jo Anne Williams. "He did a lot to promote the shag dance and he also did a lot for Sugarfoot Shag Club.

"He contributed in many different ways monetarily and time and effort to the club."

A popular local DJ and promoter of beach music and the Southern dance, the shag, Overman died in December 2014 at age 64.

"The big guy with the big heart" was also an avid supporter of Wayne County, say those who knew him.

"We were good personal friends. I really miss him," said Terry Tucker, past president of Sugarfoot, who was also Overman's neighbor. "He did so much for the community that just went unheralded. People didn't realize how big his heart was.

"He was a good friend. He was a great DJ. He was primarily known locally around here. He donated a lot of his time around here for just about any worthwhile cause. And he cooked and provided food and gave freely to the Soup Kitchen and a lot of other charities."

Sugarfoot Shag Club, a social club dedicated to the preservation of the popular dance associated with the music that originated in the Carolinas, was formed around 1992.

Members gather regularly for dance parties and travel to participate in events and competitions. The club also holds fundraisers for a number of charities each year, in part what prompted next weekend's event.

"Because of losing him this past year, we thought it would be a good gesture to have this year's event in memory of him and in honor of the things he always did for the club and for his contributions to the club," Ms. Williams said. "We reached out to his family about all the events he did, activities throughout the years for other organizations and people in need."

The dance and fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Lane Tree Golf Club. Doors open at 6:30, with dancing from 7-11 p.m. Dinner is included.

DJ Joey Warren will provide music, and there will also be a silent auction.

Admission is $15. Ms. Williams said there are still limited tickets available, by calling 919-222-8320 or 704-664-7147.

During the evening, there will be a special presentation remembering Shagdaddy and his contributions, she said.

Proceeds raised will be used to support several local charities, including Relay for Life, Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Southeastern Cancer Care and Cure for Colors, Meals on Wheels, Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro and others as funds allow.
