The Arts Council of Wayne County will host Goldsboro's first-ever Plein Air Paint Out.

It will take place Dec. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

"We have an area of downtown Goldsboro that we have selected," said Arts Council director Sarah Merritt. "We invite artists to come and paint. They come downtown those two days and just paint."

Mrs. Merritt said Plein Air artists are painters who paint outside. They take their paints, easels and other supplies, set up and paint maybe a building, a statue or a landscape, whatever they want to paint in the area that's been chosen by the Arts Council. Artists will receive a map.

"Typically, most Plein Air painters paint in oil," she said. "There are some who pain in acrylics. And some might use pastels."

At 3:30 p.m. Dec. 12, the artists have to be finished with their paintings.

"They bring their work to the Arts Council and we hang it," Mrs. Merritt said. "We'll have a little reception and people can come in and purchase the paintings.

"The art will be judged with first place receiving $300, second place receiving $200 and third place receiving $100."

She said there are only 50 spots available for the Plein Air Paint Out. The fee to enter is $20.

"Not a lot of places have paint outs at this time of year," Mrs. Merritt said. "Most do it in the spring when everything is blooming or in the fall when all the leaves are colorful. It think this is going to be interesting and fun. I also think it will be pretty because Streetscape will be finished and downtown will be decorated."

Anyone interested in participating in the Plein Air Paint Out can enter by calling the Arts Council at 919-736-3300 or by going to the Arts Council's website at www.artsinwayne.org.
