A 16-year-old girl struck and killed by a motor vehicle Friday was from Marietta, Ga., and was in Wayne County living with her boyfriend, according to a N.C. State Highway Patrol investigation.
Arianna Knotts died instantly when she stepped in front of an oncoming Chevrolet Tahoe along Stoney Creek Church Road at 6:39 p.m. Friday.
First Sgt. Jerry Burton said the teen had what appeared to be self-inflicted cut wounds to her wrists and is believed to have been drinking.
According to the report, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office had been out to a domestic dispute at the residence Ms. Knotts shared with her boyfriend earlier in the day. He told police she had been drinking throughout the day.
Later that evening Ms, Knotts walked out to the street and stood by the roadway.
"She was standing by the side of the road. There was a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling east on Stoney Creek Church Road," Burton said. "As the Tahoe approached, Ms., Knotts stepped out into the roadway. She was killed instantly."
An autopsy will be conducted to confirm investigators suspicions about alcohol, Burton said. Ms. Knotts' family is back in Marietta and has been notified.
