Carol Artis, Wayne County Public Schools' director of elementary education, was recently awarded a scholarship to attend the District Administration Leadership Institute "Superintendents Summit," to be held next month in New Orleans.

Highlights of the event will center around the theme of "Meeting the Challenges of College and Career Readiness -- Math, Literacy and Educator Effectiveness." The scholarship will cover Ms. Artis' travel expenses, hotel, meals and registration.

Only 80 school district administrators nationwide will have the opportunity to participate in the summit.

"All of our schools are working hard to prepare students for higher education and the workforce," Ms. Artis said, expressing appreciation for the scholarship. "Not only will the award allow me to attend high quality professional development sessions rooted in College and Career Readiness, but this summit will provide me with the opportunity to network and collaborate with district administrators from across the country with like goals for their schools."

Tamara Berman-Ishee, WCPS assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said the topic is a vital one as schools around the country prepare to equip every student for college and the workforce.

"In lean budgetary times, I appreciate Ms. Artis' efforts to seek outside resources to attend an event designed to help strengthen and improve district-level support schools receive in this area," she said. "It is our hope that she will bring back valuable strategies and best classroom practices, which our curriculum and instruction staff can then provide to teachers and other instructional personnel through strong local professional development opportunities."
