LUMBERTON -- An inmate facing charges in Wayne County escaped from a minimum security confinement center in Robeson County late Thursday, but was soon found at a Walmart in Pembroke and is back in custody as of this morning.
He was due to be released today, then transferred back to Wayne County. Instead, he is back behind bars in Lumberton.
Jamie Parrish, 40, escaped from the Robeson Confinement in Response to Violation Center in Lumberton. He was discovered missing after 10 p.m., according to a state Department of Public Safety press release.
Parrish, serving a 90-day sentence for violating his post-release supervision, also faces charges in Wayne County for larceny, possession of stolen goods, DWI and other traffic violations, according to the press release.
The Department of Public Safety issued a statewide press release early this morning, informing area law enforcement agencies and media outlets of the escape.
Soon after, authorities discovered more about the escape.
"We learned later the escape took place after 8 p.m.," DPS communications officer Keith Acree said.
"He went over the fence," Acree added.
Acree said the escape was captured on video by the prison's security cameras.
"They looked at some surveillance video and saw Parrish go over the fence and then start running down the highway," he said.
Deputies with the Robeson County Sheriff's Office managed to locate and secure Parrish at approximately 7:15 a.m.
