His escape was short-lived, but a Goldsboro man might face a longer sentence if convicted after sprinting from police custody Thursday.
Michael Bellamy, 24, of 436 Durham Lake Road, broke free and ran from police after being arrested for outstanding warrants, Maj. Anthony Carmon said.
"Somehow or another, he got out of his handcuffs and when the door opened, he took off," Carmon said.
Bellamy was able to run from the Wayne County Magistrate's Office across South William Street and through the public parking lot across the street from the Wayne County Courthouse.
Witnesses said Bellamy appeared to still be struggling with his handcuffs as he ran across the street and hopped a fence.
"He made it two blocks," Carmon said.
"He found a place to hide and we found his hiding place," he added.
Bellamy is charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer and larceny. His bond is set at $5,000 secured.
Carmon said he is not yet sure what additional charges Bellamy will face for the escape, but he will be charged, he said.
"Oh yes, he gets charged for that," Carmon said.
