Tri-County EMC awards $21,000 in scholarships to local students

Tri-County EMC presented $21,000 in scholarships to 46 high school seniors from Wayne, Duplin, Lenoir and Johnston counties recently.
Over the past 15 years, Tri-County employees have supported the educational pursuits of 613 students with $277,750 worth of aid.
Employees have generated the funds through sales of cookbooks, candy, raffle tickets and hot dog sales at such events as the Mount Olive Pickle Festival, said Michael Davis, general manager of Tri-County EMC.
The agency also produced a womanless beauty pageant and for the past four years sponsored an annual golf tournament.
Area recipients from Wayne County included the following:
*Charles B. Aycock High: Courtney Pate, East Carolina University, and Ashton Walker, Methodist University, $500 each
*Eastern Wayne High: Cameron Dove, Davidson College, and Patricia Malcolm, ECU, $500 each
*Rosewood High: Rachel Grantham, ECU, $500, and Davis Jones, Wayne Community College, $250
*Southern Wayne High: $500 each to Molly Brogden, UNC-Wilmington; Meredith Futrell, University of Mount Olive; Caroline Hall, WCC; Katlyn Hargrove, UNC-Chapel Hill; Janey Jones, ECU; Lucas McKay, Campbell University; Kaila Nasser, Appalachian State University; and Kyle Parks, ECU; and $250 each to Sarah Richards, WCC, and Haley Warren, Pitt Community College
*Spring Creek High: Logan Miller, UNC-Chapel Hill, $500; and Aaron Newsome, WCC, $250
*Wayne Christian School: Anna Lewis, WCC, $250
*Wayne Country Day School: Natalie Brown, UNC-CH, $500
*Wayne Early/Middle College: Alexis Mitchell, N.C. State University, $500.
Three students also received scholarships established in memory of Robert S. and Ruby F. Holmes, given annually to employees' children or grandchildren. Robert was general manager of Tri-County EMC from the early 1960s until 1988.The Holmses' son, Mark Holmes of Raleigh, presented the scholarships on behalf of his family. Recipients included Rachel Grantham, daughter of Tony Grantham and a graduate of Rosewood High; Davis Jones, son of Pete Jones and a graduate of Rosewood; and Anna Lewis, a graduate of Wayne Christian and daughter of Dana Lewis.
