A Fremont man wanted in Johnston County on outstanding warrants is being held in the Wayne County Detention Center today on charges of burglary and arson.
Fred Thomas Russell, 52, 829 Lindell Road, is charged with first-degree burglary and first-degree arson. He is being held under a $300,000 secured bond on the local charges, and a $15,000 secured bond on three counts of larceny in Johnston County.
According to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office press release, Russell broke into the house of a known acquaintance June 24 while she and other residents slept. Before leaving the residence, Russell set the back porch on fire.
Over the next few days, several unsuccessful attempts were made to apprehend Russell.
On Monday, however, deputies caught up with Russell in the area of Hooks Road and Robert Peele Road. A K-9 officer detained Russell after he led deputies on a brief foot chase. Russell then surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.
