The N.C. State Highway Patrol confirmed today that the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian Saturday on U.S. 117 South will not be charged.
Brenda Faye Godwin, 45, of 1245 Genoa Road in Dudley, was killed as she attempted to walk across the highway at 2:20 a.m. Saturday.
Sgt. Michael Baker said the contributing factor was a pedestrian violation.
Charles Robert Lopes II, 42, of Mount Olive, was traveling in the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 117 when Ms. Godwin stepped out in front of him, according to the accident report.
"Ms. Godwin was crossing the highway headed eastbound. Mr. Lopes collided with the pedestrian in the southbound travel lane," Baker said.
He said Lopes' vehicle continued on for a bit and spun around and came to rest in the roadway. Ms. Godwin's body came to rest nearby.
