A former Miss Goldsboro was named one of five finalists for her community service platform during the first round of preliminary competition for Miss North Carolina on Wednesday evening.
Emily Tucker, the reigning Miss Greater Sampson County, was among the finalists for the Quality of Life Award.
The daughter of an Air Force retiree, her platform is "United We Stand, Together We Serve," which features an emphasis on inspiring patriotism among youth.
Other finalists in the category included Miss Greater Southeastern Victoria Huggins for "The Alz Project"; Miss Garner Rachel Chavez for "Commit, Don't Quit"; Miss Johnston County Alissa Anderegg for "Alzheimer's Awareness"; and Miss Capital City Kacy Lee for "Stand Up to Stand Out."
Winner of the award will be announced during the final event on Saturday.
There are 37 contestants for Miss North Carolina 2015, to succeed the current title-holder, Beth Stovall, also a Goldsboro native. The 2011 graduate of Rosewood High School was Miss Goldsboro 2013 and went on to be crowned Miss Greater Sampson County 2014 before taking the state crown.
Miss Tucker is one of three contestants with local ties. The 23-year-old graduated from Eastern Wayne High School in 2009 and was Miss Goldsboro 2014. At last year's state pageant, she was among the Top 10.
The others vying for the title this week include Miss Goldsboro Victoria Baskett, who is from Fayetteville, and Miss Rose Hill, Casey Croom, who is from Pikeville.
Top honors during the first found of competition went to Miss Queen City McKenzie Faggart, who won the lifestyle and fitness award in swimsuit, and Miss Randolph County Katie Archer, who won the preliminary talent award.
There are two more nights of preliminary competitions, tonight and Friday, before the pageant on Saturday. It is being held at Duke Energy for the Performing Arts in Raleigh and will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable at 7 p.m.
