33 local educators nominated for WCPS Teacher of the Year honor

Wayne County Public Schools has announced its 2015-2016 Teachers of the Year for the 33 schools in the district.

The winners will now compete for the districtwide honor in the fall.

The individual teachers and their assigned area include the following:

* Brogden Middle: Shakina Oates, seventh grade math

* Brogden Primary: Norma Acero, second-fourth grade ESL

* Carver Elementary: Jennifer Heatley, first/second grade

* Carver Heights Elementary: Vonder Ashford, second grade

* Charles B. Aycock High: Steven Thorne, 9-12 technology education

* Dillard Middle: Gene Willoughby, eighth grade English/language arts

* Eastern Wayne Elementary: Tony Parrish, K-5 physical education

* Eastern Wayne High: Bobby Sherard, 9-12 band

* Eastern Wayne Middle: Thomasa Mathis, eighth grade math

* Edgewood Community Developmental School: Deborah Gill, EC kindergarten

* Fremont STARS Elementary: Shalaunda Smith, pre-kindergarten

* Goldsboro High: Thomas Garrou, English

* Grantham Elementary: Jenny Sasser, third grade

* Grantham Middle: Angela Joyner, fifth grade

* Greenwood Middle: Jennifer Kirkland, 5-8 band

* Meadow Lane Elementary: Donna Drew, first grade

* Mount Olive Middle: Catherine Joyner, 6-8 EC self-contained

* North Drive Elementary: Catherine Borgquist, second grade

* Northeast Elementary: Holly Medlin, fourth grade

* Northwest Elementary: Mindy Lane, kindergarten

* Norwayne Middle: Andrew Bass, seventh grade math

* Rosewood Elementary: Lisa Herring, pre-kindergarten

* Rosewood High: Connie Sutton, 9-12 EC

* Rosewood Middle: Lorrie Kester, eighth grade math

* School Street Elementary: Mal Jones, pre-kindergarten

* Southern Wayne High: Jason Cox, 9-12 music

* Spring Creek Elementary: Scott Ervin, third grade

* Spring Creek High: Taylor Jones, 9-12 math

* Spring Creek Middle: Julie Slye, eighth grade science

* Tommy's Road Elementary: Anna Bridgers, first grade

* Wayne Early/Middle College High: Carol Watson, 9-10 English

* Wayne Middle/High Academy: Anita Phillips, 9-12 EC

* Wayne School of Engineering: Catherine Sutton, seventh grade math.

For the next round of competition, the 33 candidates will prepare and submit portfolios that will be submitted to the WCPS Teacher of the Year selection committee. Submissions will be reviewed, with interviews of all the candidates to take place in August.

Following that, the pool will be narrowed down to three finalists, representing the elementary, middle and high school levels.

The school system's Teacher of the Year will be announced during the annual banquet, to be held on Aug. 18 at Lane Tree Golf Club and Conference Center.
