Three administrative changes at elementary schools in Wayne County Public Schools have been announced -- a principal and two curriculum specialists.
Spring Creek Elementary School will have a new principal in the fall, prompted by the retirement of Gail Richards at the end of this school year.
Mrs. Richards was named principal at the school in 2011. She is completing a 35-year career in education.
Her successor will be Nicole Barrett, currently elementary curriculum specialist. She has 19 years of education experience and started at Spring Creek in 2009.
Ms. Barrett began her career in education at North Drive Elementary School, where she taught third grade. In 2006, she was named curriculum facilitator at Goldsboro Intermediate School. The following year, she became assistant principal at the school.
She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from North Carolina A&T State University, a master's degree in education and K-12 leadership from the University of Phoenix, and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in education leadership from Capella University.
Dr. Sandra McCullen, interim superintendent, announced the changes after the assignments were approved by the school board at its recent meeting. She called Ms. Barrett an effective leader and said her experience at Spring Creek Elementary made her an ideal candidate to take over the reins.
The two other changes, in the roles of elementary curriculum specialists, also went to candidates with strong educational backgrounds, experience and leadership skills, Mrs. McCullen said.
Maguy Yancey, formerly a foreign language teacher at Goldsboro High School, will move to Carver Elementary School in the fall.
Longtime physical education teacher at Rosewood Middle School, Reed Lewis will be assigned to Spring Creek Elementary.
