A death investigation that began with the discovery of a body in a parked car left at the Jefferson Court Apartments late Saturday night has been upgraded to a homicide, the Goldsboro Police Department said this morning.
The victim, Diamond M. Sampson, 22, 600 Sixth St., was found shot to death in his car. There has been no mention yet of either a motive or of suspects.
"We found (Sampson) in the vehicle, dead of an apparent gunshot wound in Jefferson Court," Maj. Anthony Carmon said.
Carmon added that the family has been cooperative, and he said investigators have some "promising leads."
Police officers responding to a report of a person being shot located Sampson's body at 10:50 p.m. in a black Kia Amanti. The vehicle was parked in a handicapped spot in front of 1100 N. Jefferson St., Apartment 5. Wayne County EMS 61 also responded and pronounced Sampson dead at the scene.
"We have a bunch of leads and a bunch of people to talk to," Carmon said.
Due to the nature of the investigation, Carmon could not disclose whether or not any of those left to speak to might be suspects. No suspect information or vehicle description was listed on the police report.
Anyone with information regarding Sampson's murder is asked to contact Sgt. Jeremy Sutton with the Goldsboro Police Department at 919-580-4210. Callers wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255, or text tips to 919-222-4230. Information leading to a felony arrest is eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
