Six seniors in Wayne County Public Schools have been awarded Emmet and Mary Robinson Trust Fund Scholarships.
The trust fund was set up by the Robinsons for students in the local public high schools. It is based on need and awarded to graduating seniors who intend to pursue their studies in the areas of medicine, nursing, agriculture or the ministry of the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches.
This year's recipients include:
*Tatyanna Clark of Eastern Wayne High School, a $4,000 scholarship to attend N.C. State University to study nursing.
*Maria Covarrubias of Rosewood High, a $4,000 award to attend Campbell University and study nursing.
*Mason Sullivan of Eastern Wayne High, a $3,500 scholarship to study anesthesiology at East Carolina University.
*Joshua Hernandez of Spring Creek High, a $3,500 award to pursue studies as a physician assistant at East Carolina University.
*Graham Withrow of Rosewood High, $500 toward his studies in nursing at UNC-Pembroke.
*Caroline Hall of Southern Wayne High, a $500 scholarship to study pharmacy at Wayne Community College.
Dr. Sandra McCullen, interim superintendent for the district, praised the benefactors and the students for the scholarships, which are renewable each year of their studies based on satisfactory academic standing and maintenance in the declared field of study.
"These students have worked hard in school and it is rewarding to see them earn scholarships that will allow them to pursue education in the medical areas," she said. "Wayne County Public School is also appreciative of the Robinson family for (its) dedication to education and for their support of our graduates in their academic and professional aspirations."
