A fourth-grader at St. Mary School was recently selected as first place winner in the a writing contest sponsored by Duke University's Talent Identification Program.
Emilyn Steele placed first in the fourth grade division of the annual 4th-6th Grade Talent Search Writing Contest.
More than 700 students participated in the 2015 contest, where contestants were asked to imagine that they and their families were being invited to NASA to apply to join the first settlement on Mars. The theme was "3...2...1...Countdown to Mars: Pack for Adventure."
As part of the application process, students were encouraged to choose three items that defined who they were, their interests, character and dreams. There was a caveat, though -- the three items selected could not have a combined weight of more than 30 pounds and must fit in a standard school locker.
Emilyn will receive a $200 and the school will be sent a check in the matching amount, officials said.
