Goldsboro Police Chief Jeff Stewart

Goldsboro Police Chief Jeff Stewart announced Monday he plans to retire later this summer.

No official date has been set for Stewart to vacate the office he has held for the last three years.

City Manager Scott Stevens said Stewart's last day will come in late July or in August.

"The chief told me when I hired him he would most likely finish out his time in service then retire, so this is really no surprise," Stevens said.

Stewart first took over as interim chief with the retirement of former Goldsboro police Chief Tim Bell in early 2011. Stewart was appointed chief by Stevens in April 2012.

Stevens has said in the past the hiring process for a new police chief should Stewart retire would consist of a national search and would hopefully include some applicants from within the department.
