Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is once again offering the opportunity for children to become Park Pals.

The program is open to children ages 5 through 8 and is free.

It runs for six weeks, from June 22 through July 27. Children meet each Monday from 10 a.m. to noon to explore various wildlife, insect, plant, history and recreation topics.

Ranger Autumn Kahl said it introduces the children to the outdoors through games, crafts and activities with a nature theme.

"They will explore the park and have hands-on activities," she said. "The theme this year is amphibians, so one day is dedicated to amphibians. They'll learn about frogs, salamanders, toads and more while being outside."

Parents can drop their child off for each program, but they are encouraged to stay for the program, Ms. Kahl said.

Parents can go check out the visitor center or even take a hike while waiting on their child.

Space is limited and sign-ups are being currently being accepted.
