Wayne County Public Schools will hold its biennial K-12 Second Language and English-as-a-Second Language, or ESL, Performance Competition this week.
Hundreds of students from kindergarten through grade 12 will display their mastery of Spanish, French and English languages/cultures. Twenty-eight schools will be represented at the two-day event, held on Wednesday and Thursday in the Goldsboro High School auditorium from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
On Wednesday, students in grades K-5 will compete. Grades 6-12 will compete on Thursday. They will be judged in five categories -- poetry recitation, modeling of native costumes, musical presentation, dramatic skit and native dance.
The district is the only one in the state that regularly holds such a competition, held every other year for more than a decade. Administrators say the competition promotes and enhances the district's second-language program.
"Many of the students have been preparing for this event since last fall. It is always impressive to hear the language proficiency of our participating students," said Hope Meyerhoeffer, director of second-language and the ESL program. "We are appreciative of all of the administrators, teachers and volunteers who make this event a success each year it is held."
The public is invited to attend.
